Lusoreef Lda, began as a business project in 2003 in the scientific area of marine biotechnology. All the experience and new technological advances in this area allowed us to start a company which is able to culture marine ornamental species for the aquarium trade.

In the last few years, there has been an increase in the concern over the impact that the marine aquarium trade has in the natural habitats where the animals are collected. This concern relates to the fishing techniques employed such as cyanide intoxication, and other destructive techniques which are literally killing the reefs. Today, some countries put these concerns into action by employment of strict measures regarding the trade of wild caught aquatic species for ornamental purposes.

In order for the trade to become sustainable new procedures for the collection of wild species are being applied and ultimately new technology should be developed to raise more species in captivity reducing the impact on the oceans. Aquariculture should be part of any policy regarding sustainable development of the marine aquarium trade.

Captive raised specimens have proved to be more enduring and easily kept in the marine aquarium when compared to wild caught specimens, since they are adapted to the aquarium since birth.

Our company is able to raise the ornamental shrimp Lysmata seticaudata using state of the art technology developed for this purpose. Lusoreef is also putting their efforts in raising other species for the marine aquarium trade.
